The Turkey Day 10K

"Not Your Ordinary Road Race"

Since its beginning in 1980 this event has become one of the area’s premier road races. The festive spirit of the Turkey Day 10K has attracted both the serious runners who compete regularly as well as individuals entering their first road race. The energizing music at the registration area and along the course, the ideal September racing conditions, the cheering spectators, the experienced volunteer staff, the soothing massage at the finish, the free picnic with live entertainment, the classic designer T-shirt and all the other amenities have made this "not your ordinary road race."

The Course
This 10K (6.2 mile) course begins in downtown Worthington, at the corner of Sixth Avenue and 10th Street, and winds its way around scenic Lake Okabena. It’s all hard-surfaced road that is wide and partly shaded. The course is slightly rolling, just enough to make it interesting and fast. Traffic will be controlled for the safety of the runners. Miles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 will be well marked with large road signs. After circling the lake, the race ends back in downtown Worthington where hundreds of spectators cheer the runners through the finishing mile.

Turkey Day 10K Facts
There were 711 finishers in the 1997 race, including participants from 14 states: Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri, Texas, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Florida and Washington.

Picnic Reception
After the race there will be a picnic reception for all runners at Centennial Beach Park on scenic Lake Okabena. It’s an ideal time to renew your acquaintances with area runners and to talk over the race. While you’re enjoying your free hot dogs and refreshments, you’ll be entertained with lively music. You’ll also be eligible to win one of the many running-related door prizes. The picnic will conclude with the awards ceremony.

Awards
All race entrants will receive a classic Turkey Day 10K T-shirt designed by well-known area cartoonist, Bob Artley. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female runners in the following age groups: 17 & under, 18 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 & over. Special cash prizes will be offered to the top finishers in the open and master’s divisions.

Team Competition
All interested runners can participate in our team competition for no additional charge. Each team will consist of three members and will compete in one of six different divisions: Open (men’s, women’s, mixed) and Master’s (men’s, women’s, mixed); to be eligible for the Master’s competition, each team member must be 40 years or older. Team scores will be determined by totaling the finishing times of all three runners.
