First opening for the 2001-2002 school year, Prairie Elementary is the largest Greater Minnesota elementary school and is the newest facility in District 518, made up of the communities of Bigelow, Reading, Rushmore, Wilmont and Worthington.

The pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade facility is made up of three "houses" consisting of Early Childhood Special Education-kindergarten-first grade house, second-third grade house, and fourth- and fifth-grade house. Competing the 149,000 square foot facility are a gymnasium, administration and special education offices, cafeteria, music rooms and media center.

A house is a grouping of 16 general education classrooms surrounding a shared area. Shared areas include rooms to provide services to students with disabilities and students with a primary language other than English. Students receiving these services will spend less time transitioning to and from resource rooms and more time in the regular classroom. There is also the inclusion of open areas for various-sized group presentations or activities.

With its opening, Prairie Elementary was instrumental in allowing District 518 to reconfigure its grade levels.

ALC is a one story building. The original part was built in 1954. The gymnasium and some additional classrooms were added in 1965. In the 1985-6 school year the school was enlarged to include a media center with a computer lab and an audio-visual storage area. In 2001 the elementary students were moved to Prairie Elemetary and the ALC now utilizes the building.

As a Middle School, the staff is committed to preparing early adolescents by guiding and supporting their academic, physical, emotional and social development.

Built in 1981, Worthington Middle School received a six-classroom addition what was finished in February 2000 and fully used for the 2001-2002 school year. The Middle School is a one story, steel frame, masonary designed exterior building with 105,000 square feet of space. It has regular classrooms, special education classrooms, a media center, laboratory classrooms, music rehearsal classrooms, gymnasium-locker-rooms, cafeteria food service area, student personal locker area, and offices. It is located on the NW side of Worthington

Interdisciplinary teaming is the basic component of a Middle School. Interdisciplinary teaming means groups of teachers – two to five – share the same part of the building and are grouped according to different subject areas: language arts, reading, special education, math, social studies and science. They share the responsibility of planing instruction for more than one area of the curriculum. When they meet together, they usually talk about their students rather than a specific curriculum area.

Other Middle School components include advisor/advisee program, flexible scheduling, exploratory program, common team time, extra-curricular activities, reading period, quarterly classes and an eight-period day.

The outside area includes play fields, natural science area, tennis courts, bus loading area, and parking space for bikes and car
